Unity Academy, an affiliate of Unity University, celebrated Parents’ Day and graduated its Second Batch of 34 Kindergarten (KG) students on July 5, 2015, at a half-day Ceremony presided over by Dr. Arega Yirdaw, President of Unity University and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MIDROC Ethiopia Technology Group Companies.
Speaking at the opening of the Ceremony, which was organised in the Conference Hall of the Academy, Wz. Asselefech G/Kidan, Director of Unity Academy, gave a detailed account of the achievements of the Academy during this academic year. In this connection, she pointed highlights of the efforts made towards ensuring quality of education at the Academy. In this regard, she made note of the Follow-up Portfolio prepared for KG and First and Second Grade students to closely follow their individual performance and provide the necessary support. “This”, she said, “has proved to have significant positive impact on the performance of the children.”
Wz. Asselefech also recalled the Educational Trip organised for First Cycle students to the Addis Ababa Science and Technology University, Physics Museum. In a similar manner, she noted that a Recreational Trip was organised for KG students to the Millennium Park. Moreover, the Director revealed that students who participated in Arts Competition, which was organised by the Woreda 14 Culture and Tourism Office at Woreda and Sub-City levels had demonstrated outstanding performances to win the Academy trophies.
According to Wz. Asselefech, Skill Upgrading Training was organised for teachers of the Academy to enhance the teaching-learning process. On the other hand, training and consultation programmes were organised for parents to enhance their awareness on the teaching-learning process, the perception and behaviours of children, as well as the need for parents to give adequate attention to the day-to-day activities of their children.
The Director also mentioned about the unique experience introduced by the Academy, whereby parents were invited to voluntarily participate in actual classroom teaching. According to the Director, “The objective of the practice was to bring the Academy, students and parents closer; and to provide parents with the opportunity to prove their sense of belonging with the Academy. The feedback from parents as well as children was encouraging.”
Speaking on his part, Ato Taddesse Lemma, Chairperson of Unity Academy Parents and Teachers Association (PTA), noted that the celebration of Parents’ Day for the second time “has special meaning for parents. We believe that the event is an opportune moment whereby we see our children grow physically as well as intellectually.” He underlined that when the majority of parents joined the Academy at the beginning of the School, “We considered and relied on the wealth of experience of the University, its Vision, and the confidence in the President.”
In conclusion, the (PTA) Chairperson said, “Our vision is to see our Academy to be not only a competitive institution; but also a model and where people come to by choice.
The Ceremony, which kicked off by the opening preliminaries, went into various presentations by Nursery children, KG-1 and KG-2 as well as Primary Grade students (Grades 1 - 6). The Amharic and English Songs, Poetry Recitals, Traditional Songs and Dances, Fashion Shows in Nations and Nationalities traditional dresses, Fables, demonstrated by the children were so heartwarming. Parents were applauding the children and trying their best to record the events on still pictures and videos.
The event culminated with the awarding of Certificates for various categories of children who demonstrated outstanding performance; and people who contributed towards the success of the Academy. Finally, Graduating KG Students received their Certificates with colour and fitting applause from the capacity audience. The awards and Certificates were delivered by Dr. Arega Yirdaw, President of Unity University and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MIDROC Ethiopia Technology Group Companies, who gave his words of encouragement to all in attendance.
